The Tiffin Revolution

In India, home-cooked food is prepared with love and care using recipes passed down from mother to daughter for generations. Home cooked lunches are eaten thali style from a tiffin lunchbox, with a selection of regional delicacies of dal, rice, chutneys, curry, bread and pudding. The separate tiffin compartments accommodate the thali style meal perfectly.

From Monday to Friday at around midday something astonishing happens on the streets of Mumbai. More than 200,000 tiffins are delivered by tiffin wallahs to office workers with a staggering 99.99% success rate. The tiffin wallahs are considered so trustworthy that workers often place their wages inside the clean tiffin box on its return journey rather than risk carrying money on the commuter train.

The Thali Cafe borrowed India’s tiffin system in 2003 as a sustainable and waste free takeaway system whereby any customer can purchase a tiffin and refill anytime. The Thali Tiffin won Radio 4’s Best Takeaway at the Food & Farming Award in 2009 and over 10,000 have been sold in Bristol to date.

Buy a Thali Tiffin from any of our restaurants. It costs £27.50 and comes filled with your favourite Thali. Refills start from £9.50 and serve two people.
